Teachers
Each EBJ classroom has two to three full time teachers and one to two part time teachers staffing the nine hour day. The program is sensitive to continuity of care and respects the attachment of child to teacher, working to ensure the least amount of turnover possible. Children stay with the same teachers for a full year. The full time staff share the nine hour day with part time teachers who work closely with them during teacher planning and meeting time, outside workshops, and the full teaching day.
All staff are certified in First Aid and CPR and have received training in Medication Administration.
The Ones Group has three full time teachers with a collective 28 years of experience at EBJ. A group of eight infants and toddlers keep them very busy. They can be seen daily holding, rocking, and singing to their children, working in small groups at a water table or sand table, painting at the easels, climbing over, under, and through tunnels, steps and slides and snuggling on the carpet with books.
The Twos Group has three full time teachers with a collective 27 years of experience at EBJ. Here a group of eight “Twos” enjoy activities and interaction thoughtfully prepared by their teachers and engage in one-on-one and group play. Children chose from among a variety of curriculum while teachers support play, scaffold experiences, manage new social encounters, and encourage independence.
Preschool I teachers bring 24 years of experience at EBJ together each day. These three teachers engage 12 young preschoolers in play – play that encompasses books, music, blocks, art activities, manipulatives, and a host of early childhood experiences. As children work at their play, staff help build relationships – between child and child, and staff and child. “Use your words,” “Tell her you want to play,” “Ask him if he wants to share your blocks” are heard throughout the rooms. “Let’s talk about that” is a gentle problem solver that the skillful teachers use to move children in the direction of lasting friendships.
Preschool II has two full time teachers who currently enjoy 29 years of EBJ experience between them. They too use conversation to build relationships, supporting children’s right to negotiate, to work out differences, to argue, and to solve problems between and among their peers. The teachers “level the playing field” as they facilitate the discussions, validating each child’s feelings. Books, letters, writing! Music, listening, singing, dancing! Blocks! Drawing, painting, playdough! Texture tables and mud! Teachers move through a child-directed curriculum as they support individual styles of learning and plan for the children’s future kindergarten experiences.
